Black and Latino Swing State Voters Sound Off!

FCCS conducted a July 2024 poll that shows Black and Latino swing state voters sounding the alarm. These voters view and experience education differently. They know from their lived experiences that the current K-12 public education system is not meeting their needs and public schools are failing kids of color. This poll should be a wake-up call for lawmakers. Swing state voters are very clear that more must be done to improve student safety, address racism, and ensure families have equal access for their children to attend a school that works best for them.

91% of voters say parents deserve the right to choose the public school that best meets their child’s individual needs.

About the Poll

“Black and Hispanic voters view and experience education differently, particularly parents, and the data shows that they strongly believe that public schools are failing children of their race. Indeed, improving K-12 schools is a top issue concern they want their elected officials focused on and they overwhelmingly believe that Democrats are not focused enough on the issue of education. Furthermore, not only do Black and Latino parents believe they don’t get as much input and respect as other parents, but they also believe that their children have an added burden of having to navigate racism in schools. This in addition to strong concerns about the physical safety of their children in schools clearly points to a desire for change. Latino and African American voters in these swing states are very clear that more must be done to improve student safety, address racism, and ensure families have equal educational opportunities for success. Democratic leaders have an opportunity here to better position themselves in these important battleground states with this key base constituency by addressing their concerns about how the school system is serving their communities and elevating education as a national issue and priority.”
