The following statement was issued by FCCS in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action in college admissions:
“Despite the opinions of the conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justices in today’s ruling to overturn affirmative action in college admissions, denying race doesn’t erase nor will it end racism. Until we acknowledge and address the various forms of affirmative action that we so readily accept – like family legacy, wealth, power – discrimination will fester in our country.
The disparities in educational opportunity that exist in higher education begin in the preK-12 system. More than ever, we must maximize every opportunity to prepare our Black and brown students to excel through access to high-quality public schools. Public charter schools run by leaders of color are a lifeline to success for kids of color, creating communities where all kids, regardless of their skin tone or socioeconomic status, benefit.
We will continue to refuse attempts like these to limit our presence in classrooms, boardrooms, or courtrooms. We are united in the fight for what we know is right – expanding opportunity for all, not limiting it to a few.”
